Pathology of pneumonia
Overview
- Pneumonia is simply an infection of lung tissue
- It causes inflammation of the lung tissue and sputum filling the airways and alveoli
- Pneumonia can be seen as consolidation on a chest x-ray.
Classification of pneumonia
- Community Acquired Pneumonia
- Develops outside the hospital
- Hospital Acquired Pneumonia
- Develops more than 48 hours after admission
- Aspiration Pneumonia
- Inhaled a foreign body such as food
Risk factors for developing pneumonia
- Most at risk are pts that follow a viral infection
- Elderly
- Hospitalised and ill
- Smokers, COPD, Asthma
- Alcoholics
- IVDU
- Bronchiestasis
- Bronchial obstruction
