Overview
Acute kidney injury (AKI)
- Also known as acute renal failure
- Essentially describes a sudden deterioration in kidney function (hours or days)
- Measured by serum urea and creatinine
- This results in a failure to maintain fluid, electrolyte and acid base homeostasis
- Very common in hospital
- Occurs in 18% of in patients and 50% of ICU patients
- More common in Men, the elderly and those with pre-existing CKD
Risk factors
- Age >65 years and older
- Male
- Diabetes
- CKD, heart failure, chronic liver disease, liver failure
- Urological issues
